Does Your Child Qualify For the Good Student Discount?

The time has finally come for your teenager to start driving. Your teen has taken the driver's test, passed and obtained a permit to drive. During this time, there are restrictions on your teen for driving such as having a licensed driver in any vehicle they are driving, and in some states a safe driving course is required in order to even take the driver's test. Normally, depending on your state, your teen is covered under your insurance until they drive on their own. At this point, however, you will want to start looking into the Good Student Discount for your auto insurance. Time passes and your student driver has logged enough driving hours and has turned 16. Now your teen can drive alone and you need to add him/her to your auto insurance. Does your auto insurance provider offer a Good Student Discount for good grades and/or safe driving courses? If not, you may want to consider changing providers in order to take advantage of the savings.

It helps to know what qualifies your student driver for the Good Student Discount before adding them or changing auto insurance providers. The following information includes the basics and may vary state to state. The student driver must be a full time student, at least 16 years of age and under the age of 25. After that criterion is met, the student driver must meet at least one of the following criteria to qualify for the Good Student Discount:

- Have a "B" average or a 3.0 GPA.
- Be on the Honor Roll, Dean's List or other scholastic achievement entity.
- Be in the top 20 percentile of their class.
- Be in the top 20 percentile in Scholastic Achievement tests and/or state standardized tests.

Please keep in mind these are the basics and the qualifications may vary in your state or with your auto insurance provider. The Good Student Discount is there to not only help you save money on your auto insurance, but to encourage your student driver to be a safe driver. Many parents choose to have their student driver pay for their own insurance in order to learn about the responsibility and to encourage them to maintain their good grades in order to get the Good Student Discount.
