As you may know President Reagan wrote and/or re-wrote many of his own speeches. President Obama is said to have written most of his own speeches, and has at times spoken similar phrases to Reagan, but why? Because they work. Still, many Democrats today tell us that they hated Reagan, but I always felt he was one of our great presidents.
And as far as Reagan is concerned, having read all his books, his writings, and radio shows after he was Governor of California, it appeared to me that he had a strong Libertarian streak in him. His libertarian side showed in his governance as a California Governor and his second term in office as President of the United States. Still, he was not without critique.
He did make folks feel very proud to be Americans, and I'd say that although nationalism does have its drawbacks, as does blind religion following - it sure beats people saying; that "America is just plain Mean" or "this is the first time in my adult life I am proud to be an American" because it's talk like that, which hurts the very foundation of all we are and all we've built. Even if we are gleefully re-writing history as we go.
President Obama is starting to weave some of Reagan's logic into his speeches and in doing so is trying to hold his approval ratings with an appeal to common sense, shared values, and responsibility with regards to the mortgage foreclosure crisis.
The question is will those who are the furthest left-leaning amongst us, turn on the Barrack Obama they once supported, as he tells them they cannot get the free money and government give-aways that they thought he was promising? Time will tell.
