Modis My Top Spot in Breckenridge

Breckenridge is full of dining establishments that run the gamut from fast food to fine dining. I had been visiting Breckenridge for a few decades before I moved here a few years ago. When tourist ask me what is my favorite restaurant in town, I respond by asking them what type of cuisine and atmosphere they are looking for. If they respond that they are looking for upscale, then I unequivocally respond that if someone else was paying for the meal, I would choose Modis. It is by far my favorite restaurant in town. However, we only go there on special occasions since with it's upscale image comes the increased price tag.

The name Modis supposedly came from the owner, Eric Mamula's, son (He is also the owner of the family restaurant Eric's which is two doors down) who stated in his infant pronunciation, that he wanted "Mo Dis", which was supposed to be more of this.

Modis has a great atmosphere. It is located on the site that was previously The Horseshoe. The brick walls, upscale bar, winding staircase and open-aire upper level give you the feeling that you are in a NYC loft and not in the Victorian Hamlet of Breckenridge, Colorado. My only complaint about the decor in Modis is the art work on the walls. The "art" is weak and boring. The Casarietti works do however accomplish one thing. They follow the old adage, if you can't make it good, make it big."

On the food side of things, I find the Ahi Tuna appetizer to be simply amazing. I have had the Yellow Fin Tuna and Rack of Lamb Main courses and they were excellent. My favorite main course was the Modis Cioppino which is a medley of fish in a saffron based broth. The deserts change often, but if you ever have the opportunity to have the NY Cheesecake, it is to die for.
